Personal Narrative 1.1 JAPN 302, a history class, was taught mainly in Japanese, which gave students an opportunity to think in Japanese. We were given weekly assignments that challenged us to give our opinions in Japanese, as well as assignments where we were asked to answer questions based on readings in our textbook. Therefore, this class was able to make students form opinions in Japanese while also asking students to understand context. JAPN 312 also challenged students to put themselves in a business mindset while speaking in Japanese. As most students enrolled in the class had just returned from Japan, it was a way to train ones mind to think in not only casual Japanese, but formal Japanese as well. 1.2 JAPN 401 discussed the phonetics and syntax of Japanese language, and introduced "shadowing", which is a form of learning where one will quickly repeat spoken or recorded Japanese. Shadowing is a way to learn and mimic Japanese pitch accents. This course also instructed us in observing proper Japanese pitch and intonation in the spoken language of native Japanese speakers and our own, which greatly improved the phonetic quality of my spoken Japanese. This class focused on acquiring knowledge about proper Japanese intonation and helped me apply those concepts to my own spoken Japanese. |
